The Lexus LFA was a remarkable car, shining brightly during its brief run from 2010 to 2012. Only 500 units of this vehicle made it to roads worldwide, and enthusiasts have long wished for its return. Now, Lexas is teasing fans with a new LFA Concept.
This concept marks the first time the LFA badge has appeared since 2012. However, it’s important to note that this is still just a concept vehicle. While the original LFA roared with a V-10 engine and reached a thrilling 9,500 RPM, the new model switches gears completely to an electric powertrain.
“The model name ‘LFA’ isn’t just for cars with internal combustion engines,” Lexus explains. It’s meant to represent a blend of advanced technologies that their engineers want to preserve for future generations.
However, no detailed specs on the electric system are available just yet. This leaves curious fans with many questions as the concept evolves.
One exciting development is its lightweight chassis. This aluminum frame also supports the new Toyota GR GT and GT3 race car, which will feature a hybrid V-8 engine while the LFA Concept will run purely on batteries.
Visually, the LFA Concept resembles the Sport Concept seen earlier this year at Monterey. Key body panels remain similar, but with some tweaks that could hint at a more production-ready version. The new concept is larger too. It stretches to 185.6 inches long and is 80.3 inches wide, compared to the previous model, which was 10 inches shorter and six inches narrower.
Inside, the cabin sports a futuristic cockpit design. Instead of traditional gauges, drivers will see screens that create a more modern look. Yet, the absence of a central infotainment screen raises eyebrows, leaving us wondering how the functionality will play out in the future.
While much is still unclear about its production timeline, the LFA Concept indeed gives us a glimpse of what to expect from Lexus as it moves towards a more electric future. Fans may have to adjust their dreams of a roaring engine, but the shift to electric power could also lead to new innovations.
As the automotive world grapples with sustainability, the electric LFA might not be as far-fetched. According to a 2023 study by the International Energy Agency, electric vehicle sales have skyrocketed, making up nearly 19% of all new car sales globally. This shift reflects changing consumer preferences and a push for greener technologies across the industry.
