Color E Ink technology is making strides, but it still comes with trade-offs. Devices like the reMarkable Paper Pro and Amazon’s Kindle Colorsoft show issues like dull colors, slow refresh rates, and a grainy texture that isn’t present in traditional black-and-white E Ink screens. Despite these challenges, companies are eager to embrace color E Ink. Recently, Onyx International announced the launch of a $1,900 color E Ink monitor designed for both PC and Mac users.
The Boox Mira Pro boasts a 25.3-inch display with a sharp 3200×1800 resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. Building on previous black-and-white models, this monitor uses E Ink Kaleido 3 technology, which can show up to 4,096 colors. However, keep in mind that picture quality and refresh rates vary depending on which of the four presets you choose. While exact refresh rates aren’t disclosed, it’s worth noting that E Ink monitors generally lag behind conventional screens, and faster speeds can lead to ghosting effects.
The monitor includes a full-size HDMI port, a mini HDMI port, a USB-C port, and a DisplayPort. Its stand resembles Apple’s Studio Display but also offers VESA mounting compatibility for added versatility.
Onyx International has been a player in the E Ink market for over a decade, primarily focusing on Android-powered tablets. These devices stand out because they combine the visual ease of E Ink with a wide range of content from Google Play, giving users flexibility that goes beyond what’s available on Amazon’s Kindle ecosystem.
The rise of color E Ink coincides with growing consumer interest in devices that reduce eye strain. A recent survey found that 68% of people suffer from digital eye strain due to prolonged screen time. This makes colorful, less harsh alternatives like E Ink appealing. As more companies invest in color E Ink tech, we might soon see improvements in quality that could make these devices the go-to choice for readers and professionals alike.
