In its early years, Louisiana State University at Alexandria (LSUA) was a two-year commuter college, officially opening its doors in September 1960. The first significant academic step came in 1964 with the launch of an Associate in Nursing degree, marking the beginning of its academic evolution. By 1967, LSUA had expanded to include divisions in Liberal Arts, Business Administration, and Sciences.
Accreditation followed in 1974 when LSUA received recognition from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees. This was reaffirmed multiple times over the next few decades. A pivotal moment came in 2001 when the university gained approval to offer bachelor’s degrees. By December 2002, LSUA could award both associate and baccalaureate degrees, broadening educational opportunities for students.
The transition to colleges and departments took place in 2003, providing a clearer organizational structure. LSUA’s first bachelor’s degree graduates walked across the stage later that year. The opening of “The Oaks,” the first student housing complex, in 2007 was another milestone, enhancing campus life.
In 2008, LSUA made its mark in athletics by introducing men’s baseball and women’s fast-pitch softball teams. The following years brought more facilities, including a new baseball-softball complex in 2010, complete with seats from the famous Alex Box Stadium. By 2011, Mulder Hall opened, featuring advanced classrooms and dedicated spaces for art and sciences.
By 2014, LSUA was not just about academics; it joined the Red River Athletic Conference, expanding its sports offerings to include basketball, soccer, and tennis. The introduction of “Tank,” a Bull Terrier, as the mascot in 2018 highlighted a growing campus spirit.
The recent past has seen remarkable changes. In 2020, LSUA set a record with 3,500 students despite challenges such as Hurricane Laura and the COVID-19 pandemic. By 2023, it exceeded its enrollment goal of 5,000 students, achieving a 24% increase over the previous year. Looking ahead, LSUA surpassed 6,800 students in Fall 2024, with plans for the new Martin Family Student Success Center already in motion.
It’s important to note that LSUA’s growth reflects broader trends in higher education. According to recent statistics, community colleges and universities that adapt to student needs tend to see increased enrollment. A study by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center indicates that institutions offering flexible programs and robust support services attract more enrollees, a model LSUA is evidently following.
