Kentucky is celebrating its rich food culture through a new eight-part docuseries called "You Belong Here." This series features the journey of Chef Ouita Michel, a beloved figure in the state’s culinary scene.
Chef Ouita believes this docuseries will change the way people see Kentucky’s food. “We’ll showcase things you’ve never seen, people you haven’t met, and foods you haven’t tried,” she says. The series spans a year and takes viewers through nine diverse communities in Kentucky.
While many know of Kentucky for its bourbon and fried chicken, Chef Ouita insists the state has much more to offer. She describes the docuseries as a "love song to Kentucky," aiming to highlight the connections between local farms and kitchens. This food journey aims to celebrate the diverse stories of Kentuckians, many of which often go overlooked.
Interestingly, Chef Ouita points out that Kentucky’s food culture doesn’t receive the acclaim it deserves, particularly in comparison to cities like New Orleans. “We should see our food culture alongside our literature and arts,” she says.
Senator Robert Stivers, who supports the docuseries, notes its potential to draw more visitors to Kentucky. “Films like these can put Kentucky on the map for many,” he states. The series recently debuted at Tribeca X in New York City, drawing attention from both food lovers and film enthusiasts. Earlier this year, the Kentucky General Assembly formed the Kentucky Office of Film to help boost the state’s entertainment industry, further supporting this initiative.
In recognition of this cultural celebration, Mayor Linda Gorton has declared June 30, 2025, as “You Belong Here Day.” The excitement surrounding the docuseries is palpable. As Chef Ouita says, “It’s been life-changing in a profound way.”
Chef Ouita encourages everyone to keep an eye out for when and where the series will be available. This docuseries promises to shine a spotlight on Kentucky’s vibrant food culture, and it’s a journey worth watching.
