Deep inside a Swiss mountain, a group of students spent part of their summer living like they would on the Moon. This special project drew attention, and the BBC was there to see it unfold.

Many kids dream of becoming astronauts, but the path to that dream isn’t always clear. Katie Mulry, a 24-year-old aerospace engineering student, recalls her early days. “I wanted to be an astronaut but didn’t know how to start,” she says. “I looked for universities and fields of study, but there was no straightforward guide.”

Katie is now a project leader at Asclepios, an international student-led space initiative. This group conducts simulated space missions every year. In 2021-22, Katie served as an “analogue astronaut” for their second mission. This summer, she helped organize Asclepios V, where nine students spent over two weeks in isolation at a former military fortress in Ticino, Switzerland.

The idea of reaching the Moon has a rich history. Inspired by Greek mythology, NASA named their Moon mission the Apollo program in the 1960s. Abe Silverstein, who led NASA’s space flight development, chose the name as a nod to Apollo, the god of knowledge and the Sun. Katie notes, “Asclepios is the son of Apollo. It’s like we’re following in the footsteps of the Apollo program, aiming for the Moon.”

Simulations like the Asclepios mission help prepare future astronauts. Experts believe such experiences are essential in training for potential living conditions on the Moon or Mars. A recent report from the European Space Agency highlights that isolation tests can improve mental resilience, a crucial skill for space travel.
