India and Pakistan have not faced each other in a cricket match for over ten years. The ongoing tensions between the two nations have made it impossible for them to play bilateral games. Recently, during the Champions Trophy 2025, India played all its matches in Dubai because the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) did not permit a visit to Pakistan. The cricket boards of both countries, alongside the International Cricket Council (ICC), eventually agreed that Pakistan would compete at a neutral venue when India hosts the 2026 T20 World Cup.
When the Indian Premier League (IPL) began in 2008, it was a different story. Pakistani players were involved in the first season, bringing their talents to this exciting new tournament. Big names like Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi, and Sohail Tanvir participated. However, due to rising tensions, Pakistani players were banned from the IPL starting with its second edition after the tragic Mumbai attacks in 2008.
Sohail Tanvir stands out as a memorable figure from that first season. He made history by becoming the only Pakistani cricketer to win the coveted Purple Cap, awarded to the tournament’s leading wicket-taker. Playing for the Rajasthan Royals under Shane Warne’s captaincy, Tanvir claimed 22 wickets in just 11 matches, with a mind-blowing average of 12.09 and an economy rate of 6.46. His incredible performance included a five-wicket haul and a four-wicket haul, making him a key player in the Royals’ title-winning journey.
His record-setting figures of 14/6 for a single match stood for nearly 11 years. It was finally surpassed in 2019 by West Indies’ Alzari Joseph, who took 12/6 on his IPL debut against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Despite the passage of 17 years since Tanvir’s remarkable feat, no other Pakistani cricketer has managed to achieve the same in the IPL. Former player Azhar Mahmood participated until 2015 but couldn’t mirror Tanvir’s success. With ongoing political tensions between the two nations, it seems unlikely that we will see another Pakistani player compete in the IPL anytime soon.
Tanvir’s achievement remains significant, serving as a reminder of a time when Pakistani cricketers could freely showcase their talent in India. This lack of interaction only emphasizes how much the cricketing landscape has changed due to politics and diplomacy.
