Discover the Success of the VA San Diego Healthcare System’s ASPIRE Center: Transforming Veteran Care

Changing Lives, One Veteran at a Time

Meet Leon Huynh, a Navy Veteran who is celebrating nearly three years of sobriety. His journey shows how the VA San Diego Healthcare System’s ASPIRE Center helps Veterans heal from tough experiences like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the risk of homelessness.

Leon faced tough times. He battled anxiety, depression, and alcohol abuse after losing his mother and a friend during COVID-19. “I was in a dark place, thinking about ending it all,” he recalls. Seeking help, Leon discovered the ASPIRE Center through a YouTube news clip.

Seeing other Veterans who had turned their lives around inspired him. “I saw them smiling after their struggles. I wanted that too,” he said.

Since it opened over a decade ago, the ASPIRE Center has helped over 850 Veterans find their path to recovery. One Veteran from New Mexico shared, “You all changed my life. I’ll always remember the support I received.” Another Veteran, now working as a Peer Counselor, expresses pride in guiding others through healing. “We share our hope and experiences. Our goal is to help them lead healthier and happier lives,” he said.

Leon’s life has transformed significantly. He has earned two Associate’s degrees and plans to study electrical engineering at the University of San Diego. He’s also dedicated to helping other Veterans by sharing his journey.

“The ASPIRE Center offers fresh starts. I encourage fellow Veterans to reach out for help,” Leon advises.

For Veterans considering this program, they can learn more by visiting the ASPIRE Center website or calling (855) 297-8397. It’s also recommended to discuss the possibility of a referral with their healthcare provider.
