Discover the Surge: Thousands of Climate Change Events Transforming Oxfordshire This Year!

The events organized by Community Action Groups (CAG) Oxfordshire brought together over 120,000 people to tackle climate change. They offered hands-on activities that encourage sustainable living, such as repair cafes and Libraries of Things.

At repair cafes, volunteers teach attendees how to fix broken items, helping to cut down on waste. Libraries of Things allow locals to borrow useful items like tools and camping gear, promoting sharing instead of buying.

These efforts have significantly impacted waste reduction. In one year, 1,616 tonnes of non-food waste were kept out of landfills, primarily with the help of Oxford Wood Recycling, which handled about 1,597 tonnes. Additionally, 380 tonnes of food were saved and redistributed, preventing the emission of approximately 950 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

CAG Oxfordshire supports a network of 117 community groups addressing various issues, including waste, food, energy, and social justice. The repair cafe movement alone has seen remarkable growth. Last year, 30 volunteer-led groups hosted 350 events—double the number from 2021. These gatherings not only foster community spirit but also equip individuals with valuable repair skills.

Katherine Chesson, director of CAG Oxfordshire, expressed gratitude for the community groups driving this initiative. She highlighted the essential role of Oxfordshire County Council in supporting these efforts.

Councillor Judy Roberts of Oxfordshire County Council noted that the council’s investment in community action groups has been well worth it. “These groups inspire us,” she said. “They’re key to our climate action strategy.”

These local efforts are especially important as recent global surveys reveal that 89% of individuals want more proactive climate measures from their governments. People are looking for grassroots solutions that feel tangible and direct.

As the community moves forward, the collaboration between organizations and the enthusiasm of local residents will be crucial. Together, they can continue to lead the way in innovative and practical approaches to sustainability.
