Discover the Surprise: Google Experiments with Round Keys on Gboard!

Many Android phones come with Google’s Gboard as the default keyboard. It’s packed with features and reliable, so most people stick with it instead of trying other keyboards. But if you’re not a fan of circles, you might want to look at some alternatives. Google recently rolled out an update that changed the shape and position of the keys, and users are voicing their frustrations.

In the latest Gboard version (v15.1.05.726012951-beta-arm64-v8a), the keys have transformed from squares to circles. If you use the four-row layout, the keys now look like little pills. In five-row mode, the keys get even more compact, turning into circles. Reactions are mixed; some are upset while others find the fuss amusing.

Changes can be tough, and some frustration comes from unexpected shifts in the phone’s interface. If you’re not a fan of the new look, go to the Gboard settings, find the Themes menu, and select a theme. You can turn off the key borders, which might make the rounded edges less distracting. But that’s not the only issue with this update.

Many complaints focus on usability. This update also alters key placements. After years of using a specific layout, your fingers learn where the keys are. Some people can text without looking at their screens, but even slight changes in key positions can lead to more typing errors.
