Recently, a fascinating experiment was conducted by the Korean YouTube channel Tech-it. They put the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 through a grueling test, folding and unfolding it by hand 200,000 times. Surprisingly, the phone didn’t hold up as well as expected.

During this live experiment, which lasted several days, they found some alarming issues. The phone would reboot itself every 6,000 to 10,000 folds. At 46,000 folds, it began to creak. By 75,000 folds, a mysterious black liquid leaked from the hinge, and after 175,000 folds, all speakers stopped working. Despite these failures, the folding mechanism became smoother, and the phone still managed to hold its shape.

Tech-it’s host, Hyeonseo Chae, known as ITchelin, chose to fold the phone by hand rather than using a machine. He explained that machines often apply consistent force, which doesn’t mimic how people use these devices in their daily lives. His approach aimed to replicate real-world usage better.

Interestingly, Samsung claims that the Z Fold 7 can endure up to 500,000 folds, but this figure likely comes from simulations rather than actual user scenarios. Samsung hasn’t commented on this specific test.

The differences between lab tests and real-world performance don’t just apply to Samsung. Many phone brands, including Apple and Motorola, conduct simulated durability tests. However, ITchelin pointed out that durability tests must consider not just hardware but also how the software behaves over time.
