To explore underground tunnels on the Moon or Mars, researchers are sending specialized robots into action. Their recent tests on Lanzarote, an island in Spain, showed how a team of robots can work together. One rover even helped another one rappel down into a lava cave.

Jennifer Blank, a geochemist at the Blue Marble Space Institute of Science, called this a major leap for future lunar or Martian missions. These tests mark progress in understanding how to navigate complex underground environments. Findings were shared in Science Robotics.

Lava tubes are formed by volcanic eruptions. When hot lava flows beneath a solidifying surface, it leaves behind empty channels. Satellite imagery has revealed these tubes exist on both Mars and the Moon. They could be excellent locations for building habitats since they protect against cosmic rays and meteorites. Roboticist Carlos Pérez-del-Pulgar believes these sites could help us search for signs of life as well.

The robotic team from the recent studies followed a four-step process to explore a lava cave. First, two rovers created a map of the area around the cave’s entrance. Then, a small cube-shaped probe was sent down into the cave to make a detailed 3D map. This information helped the rovers plan the safest way to descend.

The concept of using robots for exploration isn’t new, but it’s gaining traction. According to a 2022 survey by the Pew Research Center, nearly 75% of the public supports increased funding for space exploration. This growing interest highlights the potential of robots to enhance our understanding of distant worlds.
