FAIRLEA, W.Va. – The West Virginia State Fair is a tasty adventure, especially with its food vendors. This year, three vendors won big in the 2025 Judge’s Choice New Fair Food Contest.

First up is the Pretzelroni Roll from The Twist. It captured third place with a delightful combo of fresh-sliced pepperoni and mozzarella cheese wrapped in warm pretzel dough. Ivan Allgyer, the owner, is new to the fair. He was surprised by the popularity of pepperoni rolls in West Virginia. “We didn’t know much about them until we started here. People really love it,” he shared.

Next, Trudy’s Ice Cream took second place with its cinnamon roll ice cream. Owner Steve Hlay brought this favorite from New York City to the fair. “It’s made with just three ingredients: cream, sugar, and natural flavors. We keep it organic. The cream cheese icing really adds to the flavor,” he explained.

The top winner is Blue Ribbon Kettle Corn with its strawberry cream fresh-squeezed lemonade. Haylee Shires, the owner’s daughter, noted how this refreshing drink keeps customers returning. “We use pure cane sugar and squeeze all the lemons by hand. There are no fake sugars. Our secret is adding homemade sweet cream,” she said.

Fair food is all about creativity and effort, and these vendors are proof of that. Each dish offers a unique twist on classics, showcasing the rich food culture of West Virginia.

In addition to tasting these amazing treats, fair-goers can still vote for their favorite vendor in the People’s Choice contest on the State Fair of West Virginia Facebook page. Voting ends on Friday at noon, so make your voice heard!
