In higher education, it’s common to hear institutions claim they’re “student-centered.” But, in reality, this often feels more like a slogan than genuine practice. Many universities tout their focus on student support, yet those programs sometimes seem disconnected from the very students who need help the most.

A big challenge arises when faculty are more focused on research than on student engagement. Many educators were drawn into academia to teach, yet the pressures of publishing often overshadow their core mission. About 75% of those teaching today aren’t tenured, suggesting that many qualified individuals simply want to help students, not chase publication goals.

One shining example of a different approach is the University of Minnesota at Rochester (UMR). This young institution was established not by following old models but by addressing a pressing need: health-care workforce shortages in rural Minnesota.

Founded in 2013, UMR has a unique mission. It’s not just a smaller version of a bigger university; it thrives on specialization. Chancellor Lori Carrell leads the charge, bringing a wealth of experience from diverse educational settings. She emphasizes collaboration among faculty from various disciplines, creating a learning environment that mirrors real-world complexities.

UMR’s first graduating class had just 57 students; today, enrollment exceeds 1,100. They receive no state funding for facilities, relying instead on innovative public and private partnerships. Their campus is spread across several buildings, including a transformed hotel that serves as student housing.

What sets UMR apart is its multidisciplinary approach. Instead of traditional majors, students engage in integrated health science curricula. For instance, math concepts in calculus are applied in organic chemistry classes. This collaboration boosts student success and improves course pass rates.

A focus on teaching defines the faculty’s identity at UMR. They aim to improve learning through ongoing research and curriculum adjustments, tailoring their methods to best suit their students’ needs. Interestingly, two-thirds of their students come from underrepresented backgrounds, with a high percentage pursuing advanced studies.

UMR boasts a 68% acceptance rate to medical schools, underscoring its effectiveness in preparing students for healthcare careers. With initiatives like the “Get Forward Faster” program, students can earn a master’s degree in counseling within five years—a response to the need for more addiction counselors in Minnesota.

Additionally, each student is assigned a success coach who acts as an adviser and mentor throughout their academic journey. This approach fosters strong relationships, enabling students to connect deeply with their coaches on a daily basis.

As UMR continues to grow, the challenge of maintaining this high-touch support model remains. However, one thing is clear: their mission to focus on real student needs is paving the way for a brighter future in higher education. UMR stands as a testament to what’s possible when innovation meets a genuine commitment to education.
