I might be a little biased, but I truly believe the California coastline offers the most stunning and varied road trip scenery in the U.S. Being a native, I’ve taken over 20 trips winding through deserts, vineyards, and breathtaking coastal highways.
One of my go-to routes stretches from Los Angeles up the Central Coast. Along the way, you’ll find some of California’s finest restaurants, charming hotels, and delightful wineries. This drive unveils hidden gems, delightful eateries, and serene hiking trails amidst playful otters and majestic cypress trees.
Exciting news: A section of Highway 1 along this coastline will fully reopen by March 2026 after a landslide. This reopening will make one of the most iconic drives in California accessible again!
Let’s dive into some of my favorite stops along this route.
Day 1: Los Angeles to Santa Barbara
If you’re flying into Los Angeles, a stay at the Sofitel at Beverly Hills makes for a perfect start. Before hitting the road, grab a bite at Maydan Market, a vibrant food hall offering a taste of cuisines from around the world.
Just under two hours later, you’ll arrive in Santa Barbara, known as the “American Riviera.” With its mild climate and Spanish architecture, the city feels both welcoming and rich in culture. The nearby vineyards benefit from coastal breezes that enhance the region’s diverse wines.
While in Santa Barbara, you can enjoy a stroll in the beautiful Santa Barbara Botanic Garden or explore the vast Douglas Family Preserve, an oceanfront park teeming with nature.
When hunger strikes, don’t miss Manifattura for in-house pastas or The Lark, which showcases local flavors. The Funk Zone is home to several wine tasting rooms, where spots like Margerum and Pali Wine Co delight with their unique offerings.
Nearby, Montecito shines with its quiet luxury. The Paraiso Collection offers stunning vacation rentals, perfect for relaxing under olive trees while enjoying the tranquil ambiance.
Day 2: Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo
The next day, head out early for a short drive to Los Olivos. Stop at Bob’s Well Bread for artisanal pastries that are hard to resist. Once in Los Olivos, a charming community with over 25 tasting rooms, explore local wine offerings. The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern is a great spot to soak in the area’s Prohibition-era charm.
For lunch, indulge in seafood at Bar Le Côte, known for its fresh, local ingredients. Spend the afternoon wine tasting at Brewer-Clifton or Stolpman Vineyards, both of which offer rich, flavor-forward wines.
Continuing north, San Luis Obispo awaits with its vibrant downtown and hiking trails like the Nine Sisters. The city is also home to the famous Madonna Inn, famed for its whimsical, pink-themed interiors.
Day 3: San Luis Obispo to Big Sur
Before heading to Big Sur, stop in Morro Bay for some of California’s best oysters at Grassy Bar Oyster Co. As you drive along Highway 1, prepare for stunning ocean views and rugged landscapes.
In Big Sur, Post Ranch Inn offers unique accommodations like treehouses and ocean-view rooms nestled in nature. This destination provides a stunning panorama and countless activities, from stargazing to guided nature walks. On-site dining at Sierra Mar treats guests to farm-fresh meals paired with international wines.
Be sure to check out McWay Falls at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and the purple sands of Pfeiffer Beach. For dining, Nepenthe and Big Sur Roadhouse are both excellent spots with views and outdoor seating.
Day 4: Big Sur to Carmel-by-the-Sea
Just a short drive from Big Sur lies Carmel-by-the-Sea, remarkable for its storybook charm with timber-framed buildings and cozy courtyards. A must-see is Bixby Creek Bridge, an iconic site often featured in films.
With more restaurants per capita than any other U.S. town, Carmel boasts a rich culinary scene. Don’t miss La Bicyclette for its European bistro vibes or Chez Noir for impeccable seafood.
Day 5: Carmel-by-the-Sea to Monterey
A quick drive brings you to Monterey, where Steinbeck’s legacy lives on in its vibrant downtown and rich marine life. The Monterey Bay Aquarium, known for its engaging exhibits, is a highlight for visitors of all ages.
Explore the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail, ideal for walking or biking, with many parks perfect for a picnic.
Dining in Monterey is diverse, with Deja Blue for live music and local favorites like Monterey Beach Hotel, situated on pristine shoreline and offering modern comforts.
Exploring the California coastline isn’t just a trip; it’s an experience rich with culture, natural beauty, and incredible food. Whether you’re sipping local wines or observing wildlife, every moment adds to the adventure.
