My wife Julie and I recently took an exciting road trip to the 2025 Bassmaster Classic in Fort Worth, Texas. We made stops at three historic spots known for bass fishing, soaking in local culture along the way.
Our journey began at Lake Hartwell, straddling Georgia and South Carolina. Next, we visited Lay Lake in Alabama. Finally, we drove five hours in our RV to New Orleans, ready for a memorable experience.
We arrived at the New Orleans KOA Holiday in the afternoon. At first, I was unsure about this campground’s urban location. It sat within a grid of neighborhoods, unlike the quieter spots we usually choose. But within minutes, any doubts vanished. As we parked our RV, a friendly staff member named Dave guided us expertly, making the process easy and fun.
Dave was not just helpful; he was cheerful and reassuring, immediately putting us at ease. It was clear he genuinely wanted our stay to be enjoyable. His easy-going nature made him a standout, ensuring we felt welcomed the moment we checked in.
Once settled, the owner, Mike, greeted us warmly and asked about our plans. He informed us about shuttle services to the French Quarter for nearly half the price of Uber. Wouldn’t you know it? Dave was on shuttle duty too!
The campground itself was spotless and well-kept. It was evident the owners took pride in creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
The Louisiana Delta is rich in biodiversity, home to countless species, including the popular largemouth bass. This diverse fishery is one of the reasons the area has hosted multiple Bassmaster Classics—four times to be precise—making it a favorite among anglers.
The Delta boasts a network of lakes and marshes, perfect for fishing. The launch ramp at Bayou Segnette State Park is just a short drive away. It’s a gateway to exploring this incredible waterway.
During our stay, we enjoyed a relaxing swim in the campground’s pool and took advantage of the available grills and playground. But of course, New Orleans itself has a special charm. After settling in, we ventured out to dive into the local food scene.
One highlight was our food tour with Leanne, who came highly recommended. Her passion for New Orleans’ history and cuisine was contagious. We started at the Monument to the Immigrant, a fitting introduction given her family’s deep roots in the city.
This culinary adventure featured a classic beignet from Café Du Monde, known for its mouth-watering sweetness and historical significance. We also tasted iconic muffulettas at Central Grocery, famous for its generous servings.
Besides the cuisine, Leanne wove stories about the city’s colorful past, bringing the rich tapestry of New Orleans to life. I was particularly intrigued by how the city has evolved through centuries of culture, conflict, and resilience.

It’s no surprise that New Orleans is a treasure trove of experiences. Between mouthwatering food and rich history, there’s never a dull moment. As we wrapped up our trip, I made sure to stop at the launch ramp at Bayou Segnette State Park—a perfect backdrop for a photo with the elusive Bassmaster Classic trophy I had acquired through a stroke of luck.
Our stay at the New Orleans KOA was wonderful—safely nestled near the heart of bass fishing while also being close to the city’s countless attractions. Looking back, we both agree, it was an adventure we would happily repeat!
