The event, called Nanaimo Infusion, was organized by Tod Maffin, a local digital creator. After posting a TikTok video inviting Americans to visit the area, he was amazed by the turnout.

Maffin originally thought only a few people would show up. “When I made the first video, I was just bored and waiting for a game to install,” he shared. “I thought maybe six people would come, but now I can see there’s easily 500 here. It’s overwhelming!”

For many visitors, it was their first time in Nanaimo, and they enjoyed exploring local spots. Jennifer Brickner came from Missouri with friends after seeing Maffin’s video. “We’re having a great time checking out White Sails Brewing and the famous Nanaimo Bar,” she said. She noted that many Americans feel differently from their government’s policies. “We love Canada and see it as our friend,” Brickner added.

Danny Albro from Washington state expressed excitement about visiting the area’s natural beauty and local eateries. “It’s cool how something small can spark such a big gathering,” he commented. Others, like Karen Doyle, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that many Americans share their feelings against the current political climate. “We don’t like what’s happening either,” she said.

The City of Nanaimo supported Maffin during the event, although he mentioned he felt too exhausted to organize another one soon. However, Mayor Leonard Krog hinted at the possibility of making this an annual event. “Many people have suggested we should do this every year,” he said. “It’s a wonderful idea for Tourism Nanaimo.” Such gatherings might help bridge the gap during tough political times, fostering friendship and community.

Experts highlight that events like these can offer a refreshing break from political divisiveness. According to a recent survey by Pew Research, about 65% of Americans believe in strengthening ties with Canada, viewing it as essential for economic and cultural reasons.
