A team, led by Hans Böhringer from the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, worked alongside experts from Spain and South Africa. They used data from the ROSAT X-ray satellite, which helps identify galaxy clusters by detecting their energetic radiation. This data enabled the researchers to create a detailed three-dimensional map of our cosmic neighborhood.

Imagine standing on a spherical shell stretching from 416 to 826 million light-years away. You would see a massive structure extending from the northern sky all the way to the southern horizon. This unique arrangement of galaxy clusters forms swirling patterns, revealing how matter is distributed across vast distances.

The Quipu superstructure consists of 68 galaxy clusters, with a combined mass equivalent to about 2.4 × 10^17 solar masses. Spanning approximately 1.4 billion light-years, Quipu is now the largest accurately measured structure of its kind, surpassing the previously held record of the Sloan Great Wall, which measures about 1.1 billion light-years.

The name “Quipu” is inspired by the ancient Incan system of knotted strings used for record keeping. Just like those knotted strings, the Quipu superstructure is made up of interconnected threads, representing a network of galaxies.

This discovery also raises questions about the cosmological principle, which suggests that on a large scale, the universe should look uniform. As we find huge structures like Quipu, some scientists wonder whether this principle holds true since there appears to be a clustering of matter at certain scale distances.

Understanding the size and shape of cosmic structures like Quipu is crucial.
