The University of Minnesota is stepping into a bold new chapter. With over 170 years of history, it aims to enhance its role as a leader in education and research. President Rebecca Cunningham recently introduced a strategic roadmap to the Board of Regents. She sees this plan as more than just goals—it’s a clear path built on the university’s strengths.

Cunningham emphasized, “For 174 years, the University has served as a guiding star for Minnesota. To continue shining brightly, we need to elevate what makes us extraordinary.” This roadmap will involve everyone connected to the university, ensuring collective growth.

The plan focuses on five key areas:

1. Engaging Students: Preparing students to actively participate in local and global communities.
2. Innovative Learning: Transforming how education is delivered.
3. Community Service: Sharing knowledge in areas like health and the economy.
4. Sustainability Solutions: Leading research that benefits the environment and health.
5. Investing in Excellence: Ensuring the university has a skilled workforce and modern facilities.

Ryan Schmiesing, Vice President for Strategic Initiatives, highlighted that the University is redefining possibilities. The plan will strengthen collaboration across its campuses, create new learning frameworks, partner with Minnesota employers, and enhance health workforce initiatives.

The roadmap is timely. A recent report by the American Council on Education found that over 60% of students today are looking for schools that offer innovation and community involvement. As communities increasingly rely on educational institutions for leadership, the University of Minnesota aims to be at the forefront of this change.

Board Chair Doug Huebsch affirmed the plan’s significance for all Minnesotans, noting its broad impact on water, food, and healthcare across the state.
