In a notable update, India’s Ministry of Railways has decided to permanently upgrade the 42nd Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 22961/22962) to a 20-coach configuration. Beginning April 28, 2026, this popular train will boost its capacity, addressing the high passenger demand on the Ahmedabad to Mumbai Central route.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 12, 2024, the train started with a 16-coach setup but quickly filled to capacity. In fact, occupancy rates regularly exceeded available seats, prompting the Western Railway (WR) to add four temporary coaches earlier this year. The success of this adjustment led to the decision to make the 20-coach format permanent, which will add an extra 278 seats for passengers.
This train currently connects India’s financial hub, Mumbai, with its textile and industrial center, Ahmedabad. It’s essential for both business travelers and daily commuters.
Despite the extra length, the train’s schedule stays intact, ensuring it remains one of the quickest options along the 491 km route.
Details of the Service:
- Train Numbers: 22961 (Mumbai Central to Ahmedabad), 22962 (Ahmedabad to Mumbai Central)
- Travel Time: 5 hours and 40 minutes
- Operating Days: Six days a week (no service on Sundays)
- Major Stops: Borivali, Vapi, Surat, and Vadodara
This upgrade is part of a larger plan by Indian Railways to meet the needs of busy routes. The shift from 16 to 20 coaches allows the Vande Bharat Express to carry over 1,400 passengers per trip. Similar expansions have taken place on other popular services, suggesting a trend toward longer trains in India’s semi-high-speed fleet.
In the broader context, these upgrades reflect a commitment to improving the travel experience in India. As per a recent survey, 72% of travelers express satisfaction with railway services but call for more capacity on busy routes. This change aims to meet that demand while maintaining service quality at a speed of 130 km/h.
Overall, the enhancement of the Vande Bharat Express serves not just to ease crowding but also to symbolize progress in India’s rail transport system.
