Nex Computer is rolling out a new gadget: the NexPhone. This mid-range smartphone aims to act as both a phone and a computer. It runs Android and Linux, giving users a desktop-like experience when connected to a monitor.
Its standout feature? The ability to dual-boot into Windows 11. That means it can morph into a full PC when plugged into a display, but it still has a mobile interface reminiscent of the old Windows Phone when you’re on the go. It’s a creative solution to a common question: Why can’t a smartphone be a complete computer?
Nex Computer isn’t new to this game. They previously explored creating a compact device using Intel’s short-lived Compute Card. Currently, they offer the NexDock, which turns smartphones into laptop-like interfaces through USB-C. With Android 16, this functionality is expanding to more devices, including the NexPhone. Linux is a hot topic nowadays, and the NexPhone includes it as an option, running smoothly as an app on the phone itself.
Connecting to Windows requires a reboot, but users will be greeted by a familiar interface. Emre Kosmaz, founder of NexDock, shared that they had to design a mobile UI with progressive web apps due to Microsoft discontinuing support for its Windows Subsystem for Android.
The NexPhone is engineered primarily to let users run Windows on a larger screen, rather than reviving the Windows Phone era. Kokmaz demonstrated it working with DisplayLink, and plans to enable functionality over standard USB-C.
At its core, the NexPhone uses a Qualcomm QCM6490 chipset, chosen for its compatibility with Android, Linux, and Windows. It’s built to last, meeting military standards for durability and offering high-level dust and water resistance (IP68 and IP69). It packs a robust 5,000mAh battery, a 64-megapixel rear camera, and wireless charging.
So, can this new device replace your computer? We may have to wait and see. Nex Computer plans to ship the NexPhone in Q3 of 2026 for $549, and they’re accepting refundable reservations with a $199 deposit now.
