Discover VHB’s Insights: Highlighting Three Key Sessions at the New England Water Environment Association Conference

Recently, VHB, a civil engineering firm from Bedford, shared their insights at the New England Water Environment Association (NEWEA) Conference. This popular annual event draws in over 2,300 professionals, including engineers, scientists, and students, all eager to discuss innovative solutions for water quality issues.

This year’s theme, “Work for Water: For Communities. For the Environment. For the Future,” emphasized the importance of tackling current and future challenges in water management. The conference aimed to highlight the sustainability of water resources for upcoming generations.

During the event, Joanna Sullivan, a Water Resources Engineer, received the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) Leadership Award. This accolade celebrates individuals or groups that foster diversity and inclusion in the wastewater industry. Joanna expressed her gratitude, saying she appreciates the chance to learn from talented professionals who are committed to enhancing DE&I within the sector. She looks forward to advocating for initiatives that support current and future workers in the industry.

In another session, Anna Keimel-Fitzsimmons, a Water Quality Professional, shared valuable insights on municipal stormwater management. Her talk focused on effective inspection and maintenance practices for stormwater control measures.

Water Resources Scientist Sarah Nalven moderated a session dedicated to coastal watershed management. This discussion included innovative septic solutions and strategies to reduce flood risks and combat harmful algal blooms in coastal areas.

Finally, Theresa McGovern, Director of Water Resources, shared best practices for private property owners in her panel, “Next Steps in the Nutrient Dilemma.” She addressed some of the challenges communities face in implementing affordable nutrient control solutions.
