Discover Wellness at Our Community Health Fair: Care, Comfort, and Connection – Rafu Shimpo

At St. Francis Xavier Japanese Catholic Center, the recent health fair was a hit. Dr. Barry Goy, a retired radiologist, was thrilled with the turnout. He noted, “The best thing is that people feel comfortable seeing a doctor.” This health fair, revived after the original ended in 2018, aims to bridge the gap in healthcare access for the Japanese American community.

Traditionally, many in this community only see a physician once a year. The fair not only offers health services but also provides translation to help maintain ongoing relationships with doctors. Dr. Goy emphasized the importance of keeping healthcare local and accessible.

More than 100 attendees took part in the event, which featured consultations with various healthcare professionals, including nurses, therapists, and insurance advisors. Free blood tests and vaccines were available at a low cost. This relaxed atmosphere allowed participants to ask questions and feel supported among familiar faces.

Kaori Imai, an insurance expert, shared how vital it is to inform Japanese-speaking residents about healthcare programs like MediCare and Medi-Cal. She noted that some attendees were completely unaware of these resources, highlighting a significant communication gap.

Events like this resonate with the community ethos. They create an inviting space for discussions about health concerns. Goy pointed out that many attendees left with valuable information and follow-ups for their health screenings.

Interestingly, according to a recent report by the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 11% of Asian Americans report struggling with access to healthcare services. Initiatives like this health fair not only promote awareness but also inspire trust in the healthcare system.

As healthcare continues to evolve, local efforts to connect with underserved communities remain crucial. The commitment of volunteers and professionals at events like this showcases the power of community health support.
