Tackling Ocean and Human Rights Issues at HRC58
This week, the right to a clean and healthy environment is at the forefront during the 58th session of the Human Rights Council. The UN’s Special Rapporteur on the right to a healthy environment is discussing how ocean problems are tied to human rights. A significant event took place on March 17, featuring sessions that cover vital topics like human rights at sea and the dangers faced by ocean defenders.
One session, "Human Rights at Sea," examined Member States’ obligations to uphold human rights in oceanic contexts. Another session focused on the risks faced by those protecting ocean ecosystems. The discussions highlighted that access to a clean environment is fundamental for human survival and dignity.
A recent report from the UN confirms that environmental degradation directly affects human rights, emphasizing the need for countries to take action. This aligns with a broader movement to prioritize environmental health as a human right, reflecting a growing recognition that our ecological and humanitarian challenges are interconnected.
Looking Ahead: The BRS COPs Meetings
In April 2025, Geneva will host the biennial meetings of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm conventions (BRS COPs). These gatherings will discuss critical decisions related to chemical and waste management, under the theme “Make visible the invisible: sound management of chemicals and wastes.” This initiative comes amid rising concerns about hazardous waste and its impact on health and ecosystems.
Experts warn that improper management of such waste is a pressing global issue. According to a recent study, acute exposure to hazardous chemicals can lead to serious health problems, showing the urgency for effective international standards. Events leading up to the BRS COPs are gearing up to tackle these significant challenges, with collaborative sessions planned to enhance the visibility of issues concerning occupational health and the environment.
