Beginning Sunday, February 15, grocery carts in Oklahoma will look a little different. Changes to SNAP benefits mean that many sugary items will no longer be available for purchase.
According to the Oklahoma Human Services, this move aims to promote healthier food choices and improve nutrition for families. Governor Kevin Stitt stated, “We are prioritizing healthy lifestyles, and that starts with nutritious food.” He believes this change will help make Oklahoma healthier and better manage taxpayer dollars.
So, what’s off the list? Here are some sugary items that won’t be covered by SNAP anymore:
Candy:
- Chocolate bars
- Hard candies
- Gummies
- Caramels
- Taffy
- Licorice
- Mints
- Gum
Drinks:
- Soda
- Energy drinks
- Sweetened teas
- Lemonades
- Flavored or sweetened water
Despite these limitations, most foods remain eligible for purchase with SNAP. Families can still buy:
- Fruits and vegetables
- Meats
- Dairy
- Grains
- Eggs
- Plant-based proteins
- 100% juice
- Plain water
- Coffee or tea prepared at home
These changes echo a broader trend across the U.S., where many states are trying to guide people toward healthier eating habits. Recent studies indicate that nearly 70% of Americans are trying to eat healthier. Encouraging better nutrition through assistance programs may be part of the solution.
Experts suggest that these dietary nudges can positively influence low-income communities, which often face higher rates of diet-related illnesses. It’s a significant step toward public health improvement.
