When the Commanders picked Jayden Daniels second overall last April, everyone believed he could help the team become a contender in the NFC. What they didn’t expect was how quickly he would turn things around.
In just a few months, Daniels led the team to five straight wins at the end of the regular season. This victory streak brought the Commanders back to the playoffs for the first time since 2020. They even scored a Wild Card win against the Buccaneers, marking their first playoff victory since 2005. Then, they stunned the Lions with a 45-31 win, earning a spot in the NFC title game for the first time in 33 years.
In that game, Daniels threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 51 yards. His impressive performance makes him the sixth rookie quarterback to start in a conference title game. Coach Dan Quinn highlighted what makes Daniels special during the postgame chat.
“He has a unique poise and is a fierce competitor,” Quinn said. “In key moments, he wants the ball. He makes smart decisions, showing real focus.”
The Commanders’ impressive arrival in the playoffs may have come sooner than expected, but they won’t be an underdog anymore. Having a top quarterback often leads to success in the NFL, and Daniels is proving to be just that. It wouldn’t be shocking to see him become the first rookie quarterback to take his team to the Super Bowl.
