Discover Why Dhaka’s Air Quality Is Considered ‘Moderate’ with an AQI Score of 80

Dhaka’s air quality remains a concern. On Saturday morning, the city had an air quality index (AQI) of 80. This placed it 14th among the world’s most polluted cities.

In comparison, Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo topped the list with an AQI of 183, followed by Lahore in Pakistan at 159, and Delhi in India at 152. These cities show how serious air pollution has become globally.

The AQI is a key measure of air cleanliness. Scores between 50-100 are ‘moderate’, meaning the air quality is generally acceptable but sensitive individuals might want to limit outdoor activities. When the AQI hits 101-150, it becomes ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups.’ A score above 150 is worrying and can harm everyone, especially with readings over 300, which are ‘hazardous.’

In Dhaka, air quality is affected by various pollutants, including particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone. This pollution is particularly bad in winter and improves during the monsoon season.

The impact of air pollution is dire. According to the World Health Organization, it contributes to approximately seven million deaths annually around the world, increasing risks for conditions like heart disease and respiratory illnesses. This highlights a crucial public health issue that needs urgent attention.

As residents take to social media to express frustration about the poor air quality, discussions around personal solutions and government actions are growing. For example, experts suggest that cities need stricter regulations on emissions and promote green spaces to help tackle pollution. Studies show that urban greenery can significantly improve air quality and the overall health of residents.
