Discover Why IIT Delhi Leads India’s Colleges in QS Sustainability Rankings, Followed by IIT Bombay and Kharagpur!

New Delhi: According to the QS World University Sustainability rankings released recently, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is the top-ranked university in India, followed by IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur. Lund University in Sweden has claimed the top spot, a significant achievement since the rankings began in 2023.

The University of Toronto, which held the top position in 2024 and 2025, has dropped to second place. The University College London (UCL) from the UK has risen to third overall. India stands out with 103 universities featured in the rankings, making it one of only four countries with over 100 institutions represented.

This year, 32 Indian universities improved their rankings, while 15 maintained their positions, and 30 saw a decline. IIT Delhi remains the best-performing institution in India, ranking 205th overall. Notably, its overall score is higher than last year’s.

Six out of the 15 IITs represented have improved their rankings compared to last year. The progress made since the rankings began three years ago demonstrates a strong commitment to enhancing education in India.

Several Indian universities, including Vellore Institute of Technology, IIT Roorkee, and Panjab University, achieved their highest scores ever this year, with nine universities making it into the top 700. This reflects a growing trend in Indian higher education towards excellence in various fields.

Jessica Turner, CEO of QS, emphasized the importance of Indian universities in the fight against climate change. “With its ambitious renewable energy goals and commitment to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), India needs strong research capabilities. Supporting Indian universities is crucial for developing the talent and innovation necessary for a sustainable future,” she stated.

The impressive rankings reveal not just academic strength but also the potential of Indian universities to contribute significantly to global sustainability efforts. With increasing emphasis on environmental issues, the role of education in shaping a sustainable future becomes even more vital.

As we look toward the future, it’s essential to recognize the efforts of these institutions and their contributions to a greener world. The continued improvement in rankings is a positive sign for the direction of higher education in India.
