SALT LAKE CITY — This past weekend had its share of surprises in college football. Out of 21 teams in the Associated Press Top 25, eight took defeats, including three against fellow ranked opponents. This shake-up has notably impacted the top five, with Oregon standing firm in its position.
Here’s a look at my latest AP ballot, reflecting the current landscape.
1. Ohio State
Ohio State’s defense is impressive. It allows the Buckeyes to keep winning, even as their offense—with sophomore quarterback Julian Sayin—continues to evolve. Their recent victory over Illinois showed they can dominate without racking up massive yardage.
2. Miami
Miami had a bye week, but they’re right in the mix for the top spot. While I still favor Ohio State due to their established success, Miami is also a strong contender.
3. Indiana
This season, Indiana has surprised many, including me. I wasn’t sure they could maintain a strong performance, yet they’ve proven themselves with less star power but great teamwork under coach Curt Cignetti.
4. Texas A&M
Texas A&M is hard to overlook. Their win over Florida was convincing. Quarterback Marcel Reed is emerging as a key player, proving that this team knows how to capitalize on opportunities.
5. Alabama
Alabama is making a comeback. Ty Simpson threw three touchdown passes, showcasing their resilience and ability to clinch wins under pressure.
6. Ole Miss
Ole Miss faced a shaky moment but managed to secure a last-minute victory against Washington State. Coach Lane Kiffin’s team keeps finding ways to stay competitive, though their recent performance nudged them down a bit in my rankings.
7. Oregon
Oregon’s star quarterback, Dante Moore, has been impressive, but his recent two interceptions were costly. While doubts may creep in, Oregon remains a strong team.
8. Texas Tech
Texas Tech bounced back decisively against Kansas in the second half. Cameron Dickey’s remarkable 263 rushing yards and two touchdowns minimized concerns about their passing game.
9. Georgia
Georgia has been winning, but there’s something different this year. They lack the dominance we’ve come to expect, even if they are favored in most games.
10. Tennessee
Tennessee narrowly triumphed against a team with a newly fired coach. DeSean Bishop’s 146 rushing yards were crucial, and their defense played a vital role in fending off a late Arkansas rally.
Teams to Watch: Arizona State, Cincinnati, Houston, Louisville, Mississippi State, Navy, Nebraska, Tulane, UNLV, Washington
Recent trends reveal that teams with solid defenses, like Ohio State and Texas A&M, are gaining momentum this season. In contrast, teams that struggle to maintain consistency, such as Georgia, may face tougher challenges ahead. As the season progresses, fan reactions on social media reflect both excitement and frustration. Many supporters are eager to see if their teams can rise in these rankings.
