Americans are crazy for hot tamales and whoopie pies! In fact, the Delta Hot Tamale Festival in Greenville, Mississippi, has just been named the top food festival in the country by USA Today. Coming in at number two is the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine.
The whoopie pie, with its creamy filling between two soft cookies, was named Maine’s official state treat in 2011. It’s no wonder this dessert has found a special place in the hearts (and stomachs) of many.
This year, the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival will be held on June 13. It’s a fun event that celebrates the whoopie pie with bakers showcasing both classic and creative flavors—from chocolate marshmallow to blueberry pancake. There’s something for everyone, including eating contests, arts and crafts, activities for kids, and live music.
According to the festival website, interest in whoopie pies has soared beyond Maine. Shops from London to Hong Kong are now offering their own versions. The festival is a gathering point for the best bakers from New England, who come together for a day of delicious competition.
The festival will be at the Piscataquis Valley Fairgrounds. Admission is just $6, and kids under 12 enter for free.
USA Today‘s annual Readers’ Choice Awards include voting from the public on the top food festivals, and it’s a testament to how much people love these tasty treats. You can find the full list of the top specialty food festivals here.
It’s clear that whoopie pies and festivals celebrating them have carved out a sweet spot in America’s culinary landscape. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival is a must-try experience that brings people together through food.
