At the 97th Academy Awards in 2025, Anora stole the spotlight, winning multiple Oscars. Directed by Sean Baker, this film features an outstanding cast, including Mikey Madison and Mark Eydelshteyn. Despite its acclaim, the movie did not make it to Indian theaters but can be found on various OTT platforms. Let’s dive into the details!

Anora first appeared at the Cannes Film Festival and also received the prestigious Palm d’Or. The story revolves around a young woman from Brooklyn, played by Mikey Madison, whose life changes dramatically after marrying Vanya, the impulsive son of a Russian billionaire. When Vanya’s parents find out, chaos ensues as they try to annul the marriage, sparking a wild chase through New York.
The film scored an impressive 93% rating from critics and 89% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, highlighting its widespread acclaim.
Even as an indie movie, Anora performed strongly at the box office. Made on a budget of $6 million, it earned around $40.98 million worldwide. The film had a limited release in the US, debuting in just six theaters and making $550K on its opening weekend. It went on to earn $15.68 million in the US and $25.30 million abroad.
So, why didn’t India get to see Anora in theaters? Reports suggest Universal Pictures India chose not to submit the film to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). They feared the board might require cuts due to its bold themes and explicit content. An inside source explained that the team didn’t want to compromise the film’s message by diluting its content during certification. The CBFC stated they were prepared to work with filmmakers and felt it was unfortunate that a release was canceled based on assumptions.
For viewers in India, Anora won’t show up in theaters but will be available for rent on Zee5 and as video on demand on BookMyShow Stream. It’s also set to stream on Jio Hotstar starting March 17, 2025.
During the Oscars, Anora didn’t just receive nominations; it won five awards out of six, making it a standout film this year. It captured accolades for Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Picture. This film truly made its mark in 2025!
