Elon University has earned high praise for its study abroad programs. It ranks second among U.S. doctoral universities for undergraduate participation, with an impressive 94.3% of students taking part in international experiences by the end of the 2022-23 academic year, according to the Institute of International Education’s Open Doors Report.
Nick Gozik, Dean of Global Education, expressed pride in this achievement but noted that the university is committed to increasing accessibility. “We aim for 100% access to study abroad opportunities,” he stated. This commitment has helped maintain high participation rates among students.
Financial aid plays a crucial role in this mission. Each year, Elon allocates over $750,000 in grants and scholarships for global study. The Elon Global Scholarships specifically support students embarking on their first international experience. The amount awarded varies based on students’ financial needs and available aid, as Gozik explained, “We assess eligibility with the Office of Financial Aid.”
For the 2024-25 academic year, out of 2,037 students who studied abroad, 13% received Global Scholarships.
In terms of costs, the averages for study abroad are substantial: $9,833 for Winter Term and $38,396 for a semester program, according to the Global Education Center.
Students often form deep bonds during these programs. Paula Patch, who leads a Winter Term course in England, pointed out that the shared challenges in a new environment help students connect. “Problem-solving together creates lasting friendships,” she noted.
On the other hand, semester programs grant students more independence. Rose Danthon, who coordinates the Florence program, emphasized that this format allows for both structured excursions and personal exploration. “Living in a new country provides flexibility for students to discover on their own,” she said.
Elon seniors who studied abroad, like Jack Biango and Anabelle Sumera-Decoret, shared their positive experiences. Biango, who spent time in Ireland, reflected on how quickly the three weeks flew by, while Sumera-Decoret enjoyed the opportunity to immerse herself in London as part of her acting major. “So much growth comes out of study abroad,” she said, encouraging others to consider this unique opportunity.
Recent trends show a rising interest in study abroad programs, especially after the pandemic. A survey from the Institute of International Education indicated that many students are eager to engage internationally after feeling the effects of isolation.
These programs offer not just education, but lasting life lessons. They encourage understanding and flexibility—skills that are essential in our increasingly globalized world.
