Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is making a name for itself as a top choice for aspiring game developers. According to the latest rankings from The Princeton Review, RIT’s undergraduate program stands sixth and the graduate program ranks tenth globally.

The programs, part of the School of Interactive Games and Media, focus on everything related to game design. David Schwartz, the director of IGM, shared that students collaborate in exciting ways to create games and interactive experiences. RIT’s curriculum combines various skills, including game animation, coding, sound design, and storytelling, preparing students for careers not just in gaming but in a range of industries.
For those looking to break into game design, RIT offers multiple degree paths: bachelor’s, master’s, and even an accelerated BS/MS option. Students in computing sciences can also dive into game research through a Ph.D. program.
What sets RIT apart? According to The Princeton Review, a significant number of students—from these top programs—work on games that are actually released. In fact, nearly all students leave with a plan to launch a playable game after graduation.
RIT has an innovative space called the MAGIC Center, where students can develop and market their games. This hub encourages student entrepreneurs who want to distribute games and other digital media projects. RIT students have achieved impressive milestones, releasing games on platforms like Steam and Nintendo Switch, and they were even pioneers in publishing for Xbox One. Annually, RIT showcases student projects at major events like the Game Developers Conference (GDC).
Plus, students benefit from RIT’s co-op program, which provides paid work experiences in the industry. Graduates have landed jobs at big names, including Blizzard Entertainment and Microsoft, thanks to real-world opportunities gained during their studies.
The Princeton Review’s rankings for 2025 were based on a survey of 150 institutions, evaluating aspects like academics, faculty, technology, and career support. This year, the full list is available on the Top Game Design Schools 2025 website, including details about the institutions and their methodologies.
In a time when the gaming industry is booming, ranking and quality of education at places like RIT highlight just how crucial it is to be well-prepared. Engaging with cutting-edge technology and creative storytelling not only positions students for a future in gaming but also equips them with valuable skills adaptable to other fields.
