For five consecutive years, the University of Connecticut (UConn) has earned a spot among the top 10 most sustainable universities globally, according to the UI GreenMetric. This ranking system evaluates 1,745 universities across 105 countries based on their sustainability efforts. In 2025, UConn improved to 8th place, moving up from 10th last year.
UI GreenMetric, established by Universitas Indonesia in 2010, uses 39 indicators grouped into six main areas of sustainability: waste, water, education, energy, transportation, and infrastructure. This year, the rankings also considered performance related to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which focus on global challenges like climate change and social inequality.
UConn stands out as one of only two U.S. schools in the top ten, alongside UC Davis, which ranked 7th. UC Davis has made significant strides with initiatives like a 16.3-megawatt solar power plant, which has notably reduced its greenhouse gas emissions.
Behind UConn’s success is a collaboration among various departments and the dedication of student interns at the Office of Sustainability. Morgan Randall, an engineering student and intern, contributed to this year’s data collection, which included water conservation efforts and energy use on campus. “Our strong performance reflects not just one year of hard work but an ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship at UConn,” says Patrick McKee, director of the Office of Sustainability.
This recognition is more than just a trophy; it serves as a motivation for UConn to deepen its sustainability efforts. McKee emphasizes that lasting progress will require active participation from all members of the UConn community.
UConn’s Office of Sustainability not only reports data for various sustainability rankings but also engages students through events like RecycleThon and Haunted HEEP. If you’re curious about their ongoing sustainability initiatives, check out the Office of Sustainability website.
Interestingly, sustainability in higher education has become a trending topic on social media, with more students advocating for environmentally friendly practices. Research from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education shows that universities are increasingly adopting sustainable policies, responding to students’ growing demands for responsible practices.
This shift marks a significant change in how educational institutions view their role in combating climate change, comparing to past decades when sustainability was often an afterthought. Today, schools like UConn are not just keeping up; they are leading the way in a global movement towards a greener future.
