Vuela is a new apartment complex in Wilsonville, designed to address a pressing need for affordable housing. Situated conveniently near a food bank and public transit center, it features 121 apartments. With rising rents outpacing many residents’ incomes, Vuela aims to provide relief to those struggling in the community.
The complex opened on May 27, with local leaders joining the developer, Palindrome, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. This event marked a significant step toward improving housing access in the area.
Vuela offers apartments for households earning up to 80% of the area median income. The Latino Network will support residents through community events and services, including 20 supportive housing units for those in greatest need. These units come with rent assistance and wraparound services funded by the Metro Supportive Housing Services initiative.
Wilsonville played a key role in this project by donating the land and providing a $1.9 million grant. This funding helped create crucial amenities, like a permanent home for the Wilsonville Community Sharing food bank and a welcome center for transit riders.
“Vuela reflects our commitment to making life better for our residents,” said Wilsonville Mayor Shawn O’Neil. He emphasized that this development is not just about housing; it’s about connecting families to transit and support services, promoting stability and security.
The project received additional funding of $8 million from the voter-approved Metro Affordable Housing Bond and a $250,000 grant through Metro’s Transit-Oriented Development program. This program encourages building housing near public transit, promoting both accessibility and environmental sustainability.
According to a recent study by the National Low Income Housing Coalition, affordable housing shortages continue to affect many communities across the United States. In Oregon, 27% of renters spend more than half their income on housing. Vuela is part of the solution to this growing issue.
One of the project’s unique features is the preservation of three historic Douglas fir trees, which provide shade for a natural play area. This blends the new development with the area’s natural beauty, creating a welcoming environment for families.
“Vuela means ‘to fly’ in Spanish, a fitting name reflecting how this development provides opportunities for residents and the community,” noted Metro Councilor Gerritt Rosenthal. The accessibility to the WES Commuter Rail and multiple bus lines enhances mobility, benefiting everyone.
