Wonder is gearing up to make a splash in the Philadelphia area. This innovative food hall and delivery kitchen, which its founder calls the “Amazon of food and beverage,” plans to open at least 10 locations soon. The first spots will pop up in Northeast Philadelphia, Ardmore, Fishtown, and King of Prussia, starting in April and continuing into May.
Currently, Wonder operates 38 locations primarily in New York City. With an investment of $1.5 billion, they recently acquired GrubHub for $650 million and partnered with renowned chefs like Bobby Flay and José Andrés. By the end of the year, they hope to expand to 90 locations across the Northeast.
Speed is their game. Wonder aims to deliver meals in under 30 minutes from the moment you hit ‘order’ to when your food arrives at your door. They achieve this by keeping delivery zones small—about six minutes in the city and 10 to 12 minutes in the suburbs.
The menu is diverse, featuring a mix of original brands such as Wing Trip and Burger Boy. Wonder teams up with chefs to create exclusive dishes and also offers favorites from popular restaurants across the country. In fact, they’ve invested $60 million in partnerships for these special recipes, ensuring each dish meets the chef’s standards.
Additionally, Wonder collaborates with local food bank Philabundance to help those in need. They even have a feature in their app that allows customers to round up their bills for donations.
One unique selling point is the ability to order from multiple restaurants in one go. This is perfect for family meals where everyone has different cravings. Imagine ordering steak, a poke bowl, and mac and cheese from the same place!
While the concept of using multiple restaurant brands isn’t new, Wonder differentiates itself by providing a sit-down experience and managing everything from recipe development to delivery closely.
The number of restaurant brands that will operate in each Philadelphia location is still being finalized. Wonder can offer up to 30 brands in one spot, allowing them to easily switch out underperforming ones.
Initial reviews on platforms like Yelp and Google are generally positive, although some critiques have been mixed. Turning to experts, it’s noted that while Wonder may provide an opportunity for restaurants to reach more customers, there’s concern about smaller independent places facing tough competition.
Behind Wonder is Marc Lore, a successful entrepreneur known for creating Diapers.com and Jet.com. His journey with Wonder started in North Jersey about three years ago, using vans equipped with kitchen gear to deliver meals. Now, they’ve transitioned to physical locations, including sites in Pennsylvania.
The leadership team at Wonder is filled with talented individuals from top companies in the food industry. Although the company isn’t profitable yet, it reportedly generates more revenue per unit than popular chains like Chipotle.
Wonder’s kitchens are designed for high efficiency. Most of the meal prep happens at a central location in New Jersey, with fresh ingredients sent to local kitchens each day. They use advanced equipment to cook everything from steaks to fried chicken to perfection. Wonder focuses on making high-quality meals without the need for skilled chefs on-site.
Each location employs between 20 and 50 staff members. Customers can order through an app or at kiosks inside the restaurants, while staff is available to assist with in-person orders.
Additionally, Wonder offers meal kits that can be delivered, allowing customers to enjoy a cooking experience at home. Their delivery hours typically run from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., adjusting slightly based on location.
