Discover Yakima Valley’s Weekend Highlights: Symphony Performances, Poetry Readings, and Fun Party Planning Ideas!

This Saturday kicks off Black History Month, and the Yakima Valley Libraries is hosting a special presentation at the new Union Gap library. It’s a great chance to learn about the local Black pioneers who influenced our community.

If you’re looking for weekend activities, consider attending the Yakima Symphony Orchestra’s “Gaelic Celebration” on Saturday night. Also, if you’re planning a wedding or big event, don’t miss the Central Washington Wedding and Event Expo happening at the SunDome.

The presentation at the Union Gap Library is set for 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on February 1. Archivist Carlos Pelley will share stories about Black pioneers in the Yakima Valley. The topics include mining, education, church history, art, and the founding of local organizations.

Later that evening, the Yakima Symphony Orchestra will present a celebration of Irish and Scottish music at The Capitol Theatre, starting at 7:30 p.m. The concert features pieces like John Williams’ score from “Far and Away” and Amy Beach’s “Gaelic Symphony.” Special guest David Kim, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, will perform on violin. Before the concert, there’s a “ConcerTalk” at 6:25 p.m. to discuss the music with Dr. Jeffrey Snedeker.

If poetry is your passion, the Central Washington Regional Poetry Out Loud competition takes place at Yakima Valley College Kendall Hall Auditorium on Sunday at 1 p.m. This competition encourages high school students to explore poetry through recitation, helping them build confidence and public speaking skills.

Also on Sunday, from noon to 4 p.m., the Central Washington Wedding and Event Expo will be held at the Yakima Valley SunDome. Over 100 vendors will showcase wedding gowns, photography, catering, and more. There will also be multicultural entertainment, including traditional dances. The event wraps up with a fashion show for weddings and quinceañeras, plus plenty of fun activities and prizes.

Tickets are $16 for those aged 11 and up, while kids 10 and under enter free. The first 500 guests will receive a free swag bag. You can buy tickets online or at the door, and parking is free.
