Want to try something different from the standard campus dining? For many college students, budget and time constraints often lead them to fast food. Finding affordable alternatives to chain restaurants like McDonald’s and Taco Bell can be a challenge. Luckily, Yats is just a short drive from Butler’s campus.

Yats is a beloved local chain that serves up delicious New Orleans Cajun dishes without breaking the bank. Founded in 2001, it now boasts 13 locations, including some in Ohio.

Joe Vuskovich, the owner, has been serving gumbo for over two decades. He loves what he does and has a strong connection to his community. “It’s not glamorous work, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” Vuskovich says. “This city is fantastic, and the people are amazing.”

Walking into Yats feels warm and welcoming. The big green chalkboard menu and the soft glow of string lights create a cozy vibe. Decorated with unique antiques and personal mementos — including musical instruments that celebrate New Orleans’ jazz culture — it reflects Vuskovich’s deep appreciation for his roots.

One framed photo tells a special story. “A friend of mine was an astronaut. He took this picture of New Orleans from a plane,” Vuskovich explains. “He taught everyone how to fly the space shuttle.”

The menu is filled with a variety of appetite-pleasing Creole dishes. Most meals feature chicken, vegetables, and rice, but vegetarian and vegan options are also available. Signature dishes include gumbo — Vuskovich’s favorite — as well as maque choux and flavorful chiles. You can choose between full or half orders, providing generous portions either way.

Regulars like Classics professor Chris Bungard often bring their families to Yats, even ordering it for special occasions. He loves sharing the experience with friends and family. “It’s my go-to for visitors, especially considering how affordable it is,” he shares.

The prices at Yats are straightforward. Instead of variations for each dish, the price is based on portion size. You can also order half-and-half dishes for an extra fee. A fulfilling meal rarely costs more than ten dollars, making it perfect for students wanting leftovers.

Sophomore finance major Michael Yurs agrees, noting that he spends around the same amount at fast food joints, but finds the quality at Yats to be far superior. “For the price, the food is so much better. Plus, I like supporting a local business,” he says.

Yats may have prices similar to fast food, but the flavors are far from ordinary. Whether you’re looking for a new favorite spot or just need a quick, hot meal, Yats is the place to go. As Vuskovich puts it best, “It’s like home.”
