Wendell Gregory is ready to show what he can do on the football field. This 6-foot-3, 255-pound edge rusher, who was named the 2025 Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year, is determined to make an impact at Kansas State University.
It’s a chilly January afternoon in Manhattan. Snow is on the way, but Gregory has a packed schedule: early workouts, classes, and tutoring. He recently moved into his new place and appreciates the welcoming community around him. “It’s great to finally have a place to call home,” he shares.
Having transferred from Oklahoma State, Gregory is eager to showcase his skills against opposing quarterbacks. Last season, he recorded 27 tackles, 12 of which were for a loss, and four sacks.
Gregory emphasizes, “I don’t think I’ve arrived yet.” That hunger drives him as he sets his sights on making the 2027 NFL Draft. “I want to be the next one to go to the NFL,” he says confidently.
His path to K-State wasn’t straightforward. He was the 11th-best edge rusher in the transfer portal according to 247Sports and the 24th overall player per On3. After entering the portal, K-State’s new head coach Collin Klein and defensive coordinator Jordan Peterson quickly reached out. Coach Cory Patterson, who was with Oklahoma State, also recommended him to K-State. “They needed me here,” Gregory recalls, highlighting his desire for a solid coaching experience and a defensive scheme tailored for success.
With a notable record at Oklahoma State, Gregory made headlines by becoming the first freshman in history to record three sacks in a season opener. His experiences at South Carolina were less fruitful, but they only fueled his desire to prove himself. “I just wanted to prove myself right,” he explains.
This upcoming fall, fans can expect to see Gregory’s versatility on full display. “I can play multiple positions on defense,” he explains. “Sometimes I’ll lineup at linebacker or take on tight ends when needed. My goal is to reach the quarterback every play.”
Gregory had other schools interested, like Texas and Alabama, but K-State’s vision of building a strong program resonated with him. “I like being part of something that’s growing,” he states.
Originally from Marietta, Georgia, Gregory started as a wide receiver before being encouraged by his coach to switch to linebacker. This decision turned out to be pivotal. He excelled in high school and earned a scholarship to South Carolina, which was close to his grandparents. Despite facing limited playtime early in his college career, he turned things around at Oklahoma State, where he accumulated impressive stats last season.
Reflecting on his experience at K-State, he says, “Walking into the facility was electric. The staff is welcoming and has a vision I want to be part of.”
As he prepares for the season ahead, Gregory is focused on his daily routine—balancing workouts, training, and classes. “We’re setting up a very versatile defense this year,” he shares enthusiastically. “No matter the situation, we’ll always be aggressive. That’s what excites me.”
Gregory is not only building his career but is also eager to contribute to building something special at K-State. With his determination and drive, he’s ready for whatever challenges lie ahead.
