Discover Zack Zwiezen’s Must-Play Top 10 Games of 2025 – Kotaku’s Ultimate Guide

Sorry about the past! Things are looking up now. Let’s dive into my favorite games of 2025!

This year’s list was tricky. I started with over 20 titles, but narrowing it down to 10 turned out to be easier than expected. Many games were good, but few left a lasting impression like Control did in 2019.

Let’s get right to it. You might agree with some choices and raise an eyebrow at others. As always, my list is random, except for the final pick, which is my favorite!

Oh, and don’t forget to scroll to the end for my top games of 2024!

Battlefield 6
Battlefield 6 is chaotic and tactical fun. Sure, there are some map and vehicle issues. But I’ve logged nearly 150 hours playing it since October. Whether I’m driving tanks or getting sniped from a distance, I can’t get enough of the mayhem.

Routine
When I finished Routine, I didn’t think it was a contender for my list. But it lingered in my mind. The game creates a tense atmosphere in everyday settings. It ramps up the horror without relying on cheap scares. There’s a single moment that unnerved me so much I won’t forget it.

Avowed
I’ve always loved sprawling RPGs. Avowed offers an enjoyable blend of character-driven quests without unnecessary bloat. It may not match the scale of Skyrim, but its charm makes it stand out in a crowded year.

THPS 3+4
Activision nailed the remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4. I prefer short gameplay sessions, which this package delivers. Skating through familiar spots feels fantastic, and I hope they make a remake of Underground next.

Despelote
I’m not a big soccer fan, but Despelote captivated me. It beautifully intertwines a boy’s life with the backdrop of Ecuador’s 2002 World Cup journey. You’ll finish it in one sitting, and its heartfelt storytelling will stay with you.

Dispatch
Narrative games have been hit-or-miss; however, Dispatch impressed me. It’s a superhero agency tale with strong voice acting and clever writing. It feels fresh and engaging, highlighting that even older formulas can work with a twist.

Mafia: The Old Country
Sometimes, I just want a straightforward game. Mafia: The Old Country delivers a cinematic experience without any crafting or RPG elements. It’s a classic mobster story set in Italy in 1904, and it’s stunning.

South of Midnight
South of Midnight is more than just an action-platformer. It’s a stop-motion adventure addressing serious themes like racism while celebrating Southern culture. The music elevates the experience, evoking a wide range of emotions.

Jurassic World Evolution 3
Jurassic World Evolution 3 kept me glued for hours. Building my dinosaur park was both fun and satisfying. Sometimes, a game doesn’t need a deep story, just engaging gameplay. This sequel is one of the best simulation games around.

The Outer Worlds 2
Ultimately, my top game is The Outer Worlds 2. It captures the spirit of beloved RPGs while improving gameplay and visuals. With quirky moments and nostalgia galore, it’s the kind of game I can’t wait to revisit.
