Disney’s leadership recently addressed the situation after YouTube TV dropped several of its channels, including ESPN and ABC. The decision came without warning, leaving many subscribers in the lurch.

In a memo to employees, Disney executives Dana Walden, Alan Bergman, and ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro expressed their disappointment. They highlighted that YouTube TV not only cut off live programming but also deleted recorded shows from users’ libraries. This move underscores the lack of respect they feel YouTube has for both Disney and its viewers.

The executives stated, “YouTube TV and Google seem unconcerned about reaching a fair agreement. They aim to use their power to stifle competition and diminish the value of the content that has built their service.” They emphasized that Disney is not asking for anything unfair—just what they have secured with other distributors.

A Google spokesperson countered that Disney’s proposals would increase prices for subscribers, potentially harming their customer base. If Disney’s channels remain unavailable for long, YouTube plans to offer a one-time $20 credit to affected users.

Interestingly, Disney recently merged its Hulu + Live TV service with Fubo. The company argues that the fee increases it seeks are in line with what it has achieved with other distributors, including its own services.

The channels removed from YouTube TV encompass a wide range, including ABC, ESPN, Freeform, and Disney Channel. For Spanish-speaking viewers, channels like ESPN Deportes have also been affected.

In their memo, the executives reflected on the impressive content Disney has produced. They cited an 80% increase in live games on ABC over recent years, positioning themselves as a leader in live sports broadcasting.

As this situation unfolds, Disney aims to hold its ground. They believe their channels hold immense value and deserve fair treatment. For YouTube TV customers now missing content, other viewing options are available.
