A recent report revealed that many drivers think they’re following “Slow Down, Move Over” laws, but a lot don’t fully understand the requirements. This is a big concern since all 50 states and Washington, D.C. have these laws designed to protect emergency workers and people stuck on the side of the road.
The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety conducted a survey with nearly 6,000 U.S. drivers to see how they respond to these laws. Participants watched short videos showing highway traffic passing by disabled vehicles, tow trucks, and police cars on the shoulder. After that, they answered questions about their driving behaviors and knowledge of the laws.
Surprisingly, over 90% of drivers said they either slowed down or moved over the last time they saw a vehicle on the shoulder. However, they were more likely to report moving over than actually slowing down.
Understanding the laws better is crucial. Only 66% of drivers knew that these laws apply to stopped police cars, and just 58% were aware that they also cover tow trucks. This lack of awareness is concerning, given that all states enforce these rules.
Experts say that increased efforts are needed to educate drivers about which vehicles are covered by these laws. It’s not just about moving over; slowing down is just as important. The researchers noted that while it’s encouraging that most drivers believe they should slow down or move over, there’s still a long way to go in raising awareness about their specific responsibilities.
To stress this further, safe driving practices significantly reduce the risk of accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), roadside incidents can lead to devastating outcomes. Data shows that in a single year, over 20,000 roadside workers were injured by passing vehicles. Clear educational initiatives can save lives.
