Do Players Believe Crimson Desert Uses AI Art? Join the Debate!

Between players frustrated with confusing controls and some investors selling off shares, Crimson Desert has had quite the launch week. Now, discussions are growing about whether the game’s art includes AI-generated pieces.

Since its release, players have been sharing screenshots of in-game art that they suspect might be created by AI. For instance, one player, Lex Luddy, showcased a peculiar in-game painting on Bluesky. It seems to depict a historic battle but, upon a closer look, features a bizarre array of centaurs and strange creatures wielding spears. And, to top it off, this surreal artwork is framed in an ornate gold frame—totally mismatched!

Another Reddit user noted their concerns about various paintings in the game, expressing disappointment if Pearl Abyss chose to use AI art. Yet, many countered that they didn’t believe the artwork was AI-made.

It’s unclear if these paintings were just a slip-up, a poorly executed attempt at AI art, or simply low-quality art for another reason. Given the vast world and intricate design of Crimson Desert, it could just be quality control issues.

Starting in early 2024, Steam began requiring game publishers to disclose the use of generative AI in their titles. If Crimson Desert has indeed used AI art, even unintentionally, Pearl Abyss might not be following these new rules. While it sold two million copies in its first day and probably won’t face severe consequences, the studio might still need to issue a notice or fix the issue.

Many players—myself included—are now wary of encountering these odd images as we explore the vast world of Pywel.

Experts in game design suggest that maintaining art quality is crucial for player immersion. When art sticks out negatively, it can break the experience. A recent survey indicated that 68% of gamers believe art quality impacts their enjoyment significantly.

With Crimson Desert riding a wave of excitement, it’s fascinating to see how issues like AI art can stir passion. Players are clearly invested in not just gameplay but also in what they see on-screen. Pearl Abyss still has a chance to address these concerns and enhance player experience moving forward.
