The Miami Dolphins are on the verge of hiring Jeff Hafley as their next head coach. If finalized, he will be the 12th head coach in the team’s history.
Hafley comes from the Green Bay Packers, where he served as the defensive coordinator for the past two seasons. His defense was solid, ranking 11th overall in the league, allowing just 313.2 yards per game. They also excelled in rushing defense and ranked well in passing defense.
This coaching change is significant for the Dolphins. They recently let go of general manager Chris Grier after over nine years and fired head coach Mike McDaniel after a disappointing 7-10 season. To assist in this transition, Hall of Famer Troy Aikman helped the Dolphins find a new general manager, leading to the hiring of Jon-Eric Sullivan, who has a history with Hafley during their time in Green Bay.
If Hafley is hired, he would be the Dolphins’ seventh coach since 2007, and notably, he would be only the second with a defensive background, joining Brian Flores. Hafley has had extensive experience, coaching under Kyle Shanahan and even spending time with teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns.
The Dolphins face tough decisions ahead, especially regarding their starting quarterback position. Tua Tagovailoa signed a substantial contract in 2024 that keeps him on the roster until 2028, despite a challenging season where he ended up 6-8 as a starter and was benched late in the year.
Hafley’s challenge will be to revive the Dolphins and lead them back to the playoffs. The team hasn’t reached the postseason since 2023 and has not won a playoff game since 2000, the longest drought in the NFL. Competing in a tough division with the New England Patriots and the Buffalo Bills won’t make this task any easier.
Analyzing Hafley’s past success, experts suggest that his defensive expertise could be the key to revitalizing the team’s performance. A recent survey showed that NFL teams with strong defenses tend to rank higher in overall success, making Hafley’s assignment crucial. As he steps into this role, multiple fans and analysts are eager to see how his leadership will transform the Dolphins’ fortunes in the coming seasons.
