Men’s basketball recently faced off against the Marian Sabres in their first home game of the NACC at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. Both teams were eager for their first conference win, but the Sabres took the victory with a 73-64 score.
In the first half, Edgewood started strong, leading 5-4 early on. However, Marian quickly gained momentum, going on a 13-2 run to lead 17-7. The Eagles fought back, closing the gap to 29-19 before a surge helped them finish the half down just 37-35 thanks to a last-second shot from Avery Houden.
The second half saw a back-and-forth battle. The Eagles briefly took a lead at 45-42, but Marian responded with a 10-point run. Edgewood rallied again, leading 57-56, but the Sabres’ defense stifled the Eagles for the rest of the game. Edgewood managed only seven points in that final stretch, allowing Marian to secure the win.
Andrew Ayeni was the standout player, scoring 24 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Marvin Haslett contributed 13 points, while Will Gretzinger and Logan Steffensmeier each added 13 points, marking their career highs.
Interestingly, recent studies show that teams with stronger defense often secure more wins. According to a report from the NCAA, teams that limit their opponents’ shooting percentages significantly improve their chances of victory. Marian’s defense held Edgewood to just 31% shooting in the second half, illustrating this point perfectly.
Next up, Edgewood University is set to hit the road, heading to Mequon, Wis., to face the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons. The game is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
