Authorities in the Dominican Republic announced they seized a significant amount of cocaine that was on a speedboat recently destroyed by the U.S. Navy. The boat was reportedly carrying around 1,000 kilograms of the drug.
During a press conference, the Dominican Republic’s National Directorate for Drug Control revealed they recovered 377 packages of cocaine from the vessel. This operation took place about 80 nautical miles south of Isla Beata, a small Dominican island. Officials indicated that the Dominican Navy cooperated with U.S. authorities to track the boat, which was attempting to dock in the Dominican Republic, likely to facilitate drug transport to the United States.
This marks a historic moment, as it is the first time the U.S. and the Dominican Republic have carried out a joint mission against drug trafficking in the Caribbean, according to the drug control agency.
In August, the U.S. deployed eight warships and a submarine to the region, claiming this mission aims to combat drug trafficking. So far, they have reportedly destroyed three speedboats involved in drug transport, resulting in the deaths of more than a dozen individuals onboard.
However, this operation has drawn criticism from human rights groups, who argue that these strikes amount to extrajudicial killings. In response, two Democratic senators recently introduced a resolution urging Congress to halt further naval actions.
