Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, recently opened up about a health scare that forced him to cancel his world tour last year. After a show in New Orleans, he experienced severe headaches. When he went to a Houston hospital, doctors confirmed he had suffered a stroke, leading to emergency surgery.
During a performance at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival, Glover shared the news with his fans. “I was having tons of fun on tour,” he said. “Then I had this bad pain in my head. I couldn’t really see well, and that’s when I found out about the stroke.”
He reflected on his situation with humor, referencing Jamie Foxx’s stroke earlier in 2023. “I thought, ‘Here I am copying Jamie Foxx,'” he joked. But in all seriousness, he expressed his concerns about letting his fans down. “I know it’s not true, but that was my first thought,” he shared.
Glover also disclosed that he had sustained a foot injury and that doctors discovered a hole in his heart, which required two surgeries. “They say everyone has two lives, and the second begins when you realize you only have one,” he noted. He emphasized how grateful he is for the life he’s shared with his fans.
After winning five Grammy Awards, Glover announced that he would be retiring the Childish Gambino name following his final album, Bando Stone & the New World. This tour was meant to be his last outing as this iconic character.
