Trump’s endorsement was enthusiastic. He praised Barr, saying he is reliable and understands how to achieve results. “He knows what it takes to GET THINGS DONE and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Just minutes before this announcement, Trump reportedly met with Morris and encouraged him to withdraw from the contest and consider an ambassadorship instead. Morris, who has strong ties to Trump’s circle, accepted this suggestion. “When President Trump asks you to serve your nation, you answer the call,” Morris said in a statement. He expressed pride in working with Trump to promote the “America First” agenda.
After stepping back, Morris quickly endorsed Barr, emphasizing the need for Kentuckians to support the candidate who understands their needs. This endorsement could help solidify Barr’s position in the race.
Interestingly, surveys leading up to this announcement indicated a competitive primary. While Barr and former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron were in a tight race, Morris was trailing behind them. Now, Morris’s exit may streamline support for Barr as they approach the primary on May 19.
Morris is known for his entrepreneurial background, having built a waste management company. He established himself as an outsider with strong connections to the MAGA movement. In fact, he announced his candidacy on Donald Trump Jr.’s podcast last year.
Kentucky has not voted for a Democrat in the Senate since 1992, highlighting the challenges faced by any would-be Democratic candidates. This year, the Democratic field includes Charles Booker, Amy McGrath, and several others, but the GOP nominee is expected to have a strong advantage in the general election.
Polls show ongoing interest among Kentuckians regarding Trump’s influence on local politics. For instance, a recent survey found that 67% of voters still identify as Republicans, illustrating Trump’s lasting impact on the party.
