President Donald Trump recently shared his views on birthright citizenship. He claimed that this policy was created mainly for the children of slaves, not for everyone around the world to enter the U.S. freely.
On his inauguration day, Trump signed an executive order aimed at limiting birthright citizenship. However, this order was quickly blocked by a federal court in Seattle. Trump has stated he plans to appeal this ruling and is optimistic about a favorable decision from the Supreme Court.
During a press conference in the Oval Office, Trump emphasized that the intent behind birthright citizenship was focused on the descendants of enslaved individuals. He expressed concern about people coming into the U.S. without qualifications or intent to contribute positively. “This was not meant for the whole world to come in and pile into the United States,” he said.
He further stated, “I fully support the principle of birthright citizenship for the children of slaves, but it was never intended for everyone.”
In response to Trump’s executive order, a group of Republican Senators introduced a bill to tighten birthright citizenship rules. This proposed law would limit citizenship to children born in the U.S. only if at least one parent is a U.S. citizen, a lawful permanent resident, or a member of the armed forces.
According to Senators Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, and Katie Britt, the current system encourages illegal immigration and poses risks to national security. They noted that the U.S. is one of just 33 countries without restrictions on this policy. Estimates suggest that in 2023, around 225,000 to 250,000 births occurred to illegal immigrants, accounting for nearly 7% of all U.S. births.
The proposed Birthright Citizenship Act of 2025 would only apply to children born after the law goes into effect. This legislation aims to clarify eligibility for citizenship based on the parent’s status, potentially reshaping how birthright citizenship is applied in the future.
