US President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of rejoining the World Health Organization (WHO). This comes shortly after he signed an executive order for the US to exit the organization.
During a rally in Las Vegas, Trump mentioned, “Maybe we would consider doing it again, I don’t know. Maybe we would. They would have to clean it up.” He had previously criticized the WHO for mishandling the Covid-19 pandemic and other health crises.
The US is set to officially leave WHO on January 22, 2026. Trump’s decision to withdraw came after he was sworn in for a second term.
The impact of the US leaving the WHO could be substantial. The US has been a key financial supporter since 1948, contributing about 18% of the organization’s total funding. For the 2024-2025 budget, the US was set to provide $6.8 billion.
Without US support, vital health programs may struggle. This could especially harm initiatives aimed at battling major health threats like tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. Experts warn that losing access to information from WHO could pose significant risks to public health in America.
Trump has expressed dissatisfaction that the US contributes more to the WHO than China, despite China’s larger population. He also mentioned plans to encourage Saudi Arabia to increase its investment in the US from $600 billion to around $1 trillion.
