On the night of November 23, you might think Saturn’s rings have vanished. If you look through a telescope, you’ll realize it’s an illusion! This happens because the rings will line up edge-on with Earth, making them almost invisible.
Saturn’s rings are unique and have caught our attention for centuries. Their stunning appearance changes depending on how Saturn orbits the sun, tilted at an angle of about 26.7 degrees. As Saturn and Earth move through space, we sometimes see the rings fully displayed, while at other times, they seem to disappear completely. This alignment is called a “ring plane crossing.”

If you have a telescope with an opening of 4 inches or more, you should be able to catch details of Saturn’s swirling clouds and see some of its largest moons, including Titan, Enceladus, and Rhea.
